Product Description

SÀL is a new work written by Lewis born musician/composer Iain Morrison with imagery/film by pioneering Scottish artists Dalziel + Scullion.

A technical and emotional tour de force, it was the first major artist commission to commemorate the centenary of the Iolaire,
co-commissioned by An Lanntairand 14-18 NOW.

Now, it’s been released in CD format on Peatfire Records.

The work was created within a landscape of light and darkness, the island of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides, Scotland. On the rocks off the coast of Lewis a ship sank in the early hours of 1 January 1919, with the loss of over 200 lives. This was the worst peacetime shipping disaster in British coastal waters of the 20th Century.

The tragedy was made crueler by the fact that the men on board the HMY Iolaire were survivors of the First World War.

Iain Morrison’s great grandfather was one of those who lost his life that night, a night that should have been a celebration, a homecoming, an end to war. Instead it felt like retribution, the ship sank yards from shore in a savage storm. To communities that had already suffered terrible wartime losses, it was an unbearable blow, a loss so painful it remained wreathed in silence for decades.

This event is the genesis of SÀL (meaing ‘saltwater’), which Iain Morrison describes as“a story that has been deep in me since I can remember”.

It grapples, it searches, it rests. SÀL also creates space and light: “we need that surely, art can offer that.”

SÀL is a meditation on who we are, fashioned by events, context and place.
