Anticipating ‘Vancouver’ (MSMCD169), her critically-acclaimed, dark and melodious camp-fire meditation on the forces of the heart, Liverpool-born, Berlin-based Gem Andrews secured a reputation for driving raw honesty into bitter sweet settings on this, her 2011 debut album.

Andrews recalls the album born of a troubled time. Bankrupted, her back broken in a riding accident, and a relationship at  an end, she cites ‘Scatter’ as ‘something of a meditation on being stuck in a bad place, both emotionally and physically’.

Interestingly, it’s a lusher affair than its successor both in terms of production and in the sheer amount of talent support she garnered in the studio.

Recorded in Newcastle, UK, ‘Scatter’ also features Chris Hillman (Billy Bragg), Nicky Rushton (And All Because the Lady Loves), Gabriel Minnikin (The Guthries, Ruth Minnikin), Sue McLaren (Paul Van Dyk), Beccy Owen, and more.

And it nails both Andrews’  compositional strengths and ear for a melodic hook – admirably.
