BBC station, Radio Solent scored an entertaining interview last week with Barry Johnston (aka Alexander) when they asked the former front man of 70s’ sunshine pop vocal group Design in for a chat about 50th anniversary album ‘Children of the Mist’ and his experiences appearing on The Morecambe & Wise Show, The Two Ronnies, The Tommy Cooper Hour and others …

On Alex Dyke’s ‘Wall of Sound Show’, the time flew by playing tracks from the album and gossiping about favourite (and less so) show hosts of the day; Barry’s tenure with The Beatles’ Apple Publishing company in the 60’s; why Britain’s most profilic TV show guests didn’t score a Number One hit (‘lack of airplay!’, remarks Barry with a touch of irony), plus whatever happened to the group afterwards.

So much so, Alex (pictured above) is getting Barry back into the studio for more Design music and to talk about his famous dad, cricket commentator, Brian ‘Johnners’ Johnston, those TV show hosts, and Barry’s time as an ex-radio DJ on  … yes, Radio Solent!

‘Children of the Mist’ dips into Design’s first four albums, revealing a talent with intentions beyond their image as smiling, sweet girl/boy popsters for mums and dads.
