An homage to the late, great singer-songwriter Bert Jansch by his acclaimed biographer is going to be ‘personal’ and this 3-track gem is that, and more.
Having been asked to perform one of a series of worldwide stops in the Bert Jansch Foundation’s ‘Around the World in 80 Plays’ initiative to scale his music out (Jansch’s favoured Yamaha guitars are flown around the world and musicians post videos or organise events in which they express their regard for his music and perform something associated with him), Colin found his nostalgia for the subject of ‘Dazzling Stranger: Bert Jansch and the folk and blues revival’ (Bloomsbury, 2000; rev. ed. 2010) rekindled.
“I was transported to early research trips to Edinburgh in 1991 towards my eventual biography, to Anne Briggs’ 1960s recordings on a Walkman on South Bridge at dusk, and being present at the filming of a magical Jansch and Briggs performance in the former premises of the Howff Folk Club on the Royal Mile for Jan Leman’s Acoustic Routes BBC film on Jansch and his peers in 1992.
“Make Your Own World came to me very quickly and was recorded a few days later. It’s an homage to Jansch in several ways – stylistically, lyrically, as a memoir and as an acknowledgement of his example.”
Belfast-based Harper has strong form as a musician in his own right.
Colin has written six works of music history, been involved in many archive/reissue CD projects, recorded a lot of his own music (available here at Market Square in his ‘Sunset Cavaliers’ and ‘Titanium Flag’ albums) and traces these back to Bert Jansch’s music.
“Jansch was the pebble that created all those ripples, and ‘Make Your Own World’ is a kind of reflection on that – both personal and universal,” he reflects.
Two further tracks on the digital single yield ‘Rachelle’, a demo of a tune that Colin recorded for Titanium Flag (2010; remastered 2017) and ‘Blues for a Green Earth’, recorded with Jansch on second guitar in 2004 for The Wildlife Album (also available on the Market Square label). This mix, Bert’s own, first appeared as a bonus on Colin’s 2016 Sunset Cavaliers.
